Nature at dizzying heights: our peregrine falcons at Nickelhütte Aue

Wildlife conservation requires dedication – sometimes in unusual locations. For many years now, our 180-metre-high factory chimney has been a safe nesting site for peregrine falcons. And we’ve been working with the Arbeitskreis Wanderfalkenschutz e. V. (working group for peregrine falcon protection), to develop this opportunity into a special project that demonstrates successful cooperation between industry and nature.

The peregrine falcon is one of Europe’s most fascinating birds of prey: with a dive speed of over 320 km/h and exceptional eyesight, it’s one of the world's fastest hunters. While they’re cliff breeders by nature, some have now adapted to use tall buildings as nesting sites.

Our camera allows you to follow the action in the nest up close – from the breeding season through to the fledglings’ first attempts at flight. The birds are regularly monitored and ringed by ornithologists to track their movements. Check back regularly and also explore our falcon cam archive with impressions from past breeding seasons.
